Spring Forward: Time to Refresh and Renew Your Database Strategy

By Maggie Smith

As we celebrate Earth Day and Spring in the Northern Hemisphere, our thoughts turn to our garden. Perhaps it’s time to prune and weed, to refresh and renew and make some changes to the landscape. Change can be hard, but with the right tools, it can bring rewards.

These same actions apply to the datacenter and the workloads supported. Consider the enterprise database — it’s probably the most important workload in your datacenter. Yet modernizing the database infrastructure can raise the following questions:

  • Are newer technologies such as public clouds right for your database?
  • How do I ensure data compliance in public clouds?
  • What effect will a new solution have on Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)?
  • How will a database infrastructure refresh improve operational efficiencies such as copy data management, patching, and user provisioning?

Imagine that you can see into and simplify your database management and monitoring processes. It’s possible with the database solutions Nutanix offers.

Let’s first discuss the database infrastructure. Public cloud for databases has its appeal with simplicity, usability, flexible consumption, and continuous improvement. But moving that database to the public cloud as its sole foundation carries risk. Legacy databases can be complicated, time-consuming, and expensive to move due to refactoring, customization, and interdependencies. There are regulatory concerns for the hosted data and how it might need to be protected. Finally, databases have ongoing demands for predictable access and performance.

The Nutanix hybrid cloud solutions allow you to leverage the advantages of both public cloud and on-premises deployments — flexibility and agility, as well as security, compliance and control. Nutanix offers Unified Management that allows the ability to seamlessly move database workloads across any cloud without significant architecture changes. A full range of system options can build a cloud model that fits your business and addresses your data compliance requirements.

Now let’s look at ways to improve database operational efficiencies. Nutanix Era, a database-as-a-service offering, simplifies database management across public and private clouds from one centralized control plane. Era customers have reported that they can deploy database instances in minutes versus legacy practices that would take days or weeks, with best practice standards, including complex HA deployments across clouds and datacenters. Finally, Era keeps databases protected with one-click, zero-byte clones and snapshots that recover databases in minutes.

The value Era brings to database management is a significant TCO reduction from database operational efficiencies. Forrester Research conducted a survey of Nutanix Era customers and discovered that, on average, they experienced an ROI of approximately 291% with an Net Present Value of $6.7M. Era generated, on average, $800 per TB of avoided storage due to the efficiencies of database clones. Era automation of database patching contributed to a cost reduction of $35K per hour by reducing patching downtime from four hours per patching event to 30 minutes.

Pruning and refreshing the garden require the right tools to gain perfection. Refreshing the database infrastructure also requires the right set of tools for success. Learn more about Nutanix hybrid cloud solutions and take Era for a test drive to see for yourself. Enjoy Spring and Happy Earth Day.
